I’m feeling very English tonight…
Today, much to my excitement, I found some clotted cream at the grocery store. I’ve looked in the past, but I’ve never been able to find it for sale around here before (For those who don’t know, yes the name makes it sound disgusting, but clotted cream is sort of a cross between really heavy whipped cream and nice, thick butter. Definitely not low-fat). It was expensive, and of course it was the kind sold in a jar and had been sitting there on the shelf for who knows how long, so it’s not as good as the real fresh stuff. Still, I snatched it up and brought it home, where I am currently enjoying it with a traditional English cream tea – English breakfast tea with milk, scones, and strawberry jam.
To go with my quintessential English snack, I’m watching the most recent episode of QI. If you’re the kind of person who likes stashing away interesting factoids to use on people later, then you’ll love this show. It’s a British panel TV show hosted by Stephen Fry and featuring various British comedians and celebrities ostensibly testing their knowledge of facts on various subjects but mostly just trying to be as funny as possible. It’s one of the cleverest, wittiest TV shows I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, it’s never been aired in the States, so it’s hard to get my fix. Luckily some wonderful people on YouTube are great about posting the most recent episodes so those of us outside of the UK can enjoy them. Here’s the first part of episode one from the season that’s currently running (featuring one of my favorite British comedians, David Mitchell):

My husband’s aunt gets all excited when she finds clotted cream too, because it is so hard to find. I forget what she uses it for though, I know she makes a special recipe with it…I’m sure it’s good!
I just read your bio, I’ve spent a few nights in Bloomington/Normal in my college days visiting friends (I went to Uof I). I’m also an 80′s music fan!
Clotted cream is delectable, I agree. In fact, the entire line-up for your tea sounds delightful. I was born in Canada where clotted cream and other British imports are more readily available – along with BBC programming which I like too. Hadn’t heard of QI though. Thanks for commenting on my blog. I’ve started following yours.
You are making me homesick…Well, home hungry. Is that the same? I can’t go back to England without having scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam. I come back with a suitcase full of English sweets.
I came by your blog MotherReader’s blog challange.
Oh, clotted cream! One of mankind’s greatest inventions.
Since you mentioned Stephen Fry, I must check out the show on YouTube. Have you ever searched Google video for Fry and Laurie? They do some hilarious sketches together!
Ooh, yes, I love A Bit of Fry and Laurie! And of course, their Jeeves and Wooster series as well. Since I’ve already shown my hand as a serious British comedy addict, I might as well mention that if you like A Bit of Fry and Laurie, you might also want to check out That Mitchell and Webb look if you haven’t already. It’s another comedy duo sketch show, with David Mitchell and Robert Webb, and it is HILARIOUS.
